One important part of the homebuying and -selling process is finding the right Realtor®. Who you work with matters, and you deserve to find an agent that’s a good fit for you!
So how exactly do you find the right agent? Interview them! You do not need to hire the first agent you come into contact with. Instead, talk with a few different agents until you find the right fit.
We put together this list of questions you can ask your potential Realtor® before hiring them. Some of these questions are for interviewing buyer agents, some are for seller agents, and others can be used for both! Bring this list along with you when you meet with any potential Realtor®, and take notes about their answers.
General Questions
- Ask about their experience in the business. How long have they been in the industry? How many sales have they made? Is real estate their full-time career or is it a side job?
- Do they have past client references you can contact?
- What is their fee?
- How will they help you find other professionals, such as home inspectors, title company, insurance, etc.?
- How many clients are they servicing right now?
- How will they communicate with you throughout the process?
Questions for Buyer Agents
- How long does it usually take for their clients to find the right home?
- How familiar are they with the area you want to move to?
- Do they require their clients to get pre-approved first?
- If you’re a first-time homebuyer, how will they help you understand the process and guide you through each step?
Questions for Seller Agents
- How many days do their homes typically last on the market?
- What is their typical sales-to-sales-price ratio?
- What’s their marketing strategy for selling your home?
- How familiar are they with the area your home is located in?
- If you’re a first-time seller, how will they help you understand the process and guide you through each step?
