McLean, Virginia
Fairfax County

McLean - its very name conjures up spies and clandestine meetings to help save the world. In reality, although the CIA does make its HQ here, McLean is a very affluent bedroom community just outside DC, with lots of families with children who attend the local Fairfax County public schools. McLean is filled with beautiful homes in diverse neighborhoods, with an average value over $940,000, and commute time of 15 minutes to DC (via the Metro lines). One neighborhood, Hamlet, for example, has homes that look as though they were built during Shakespeare's time. It is ranked as one of the most secure cities in the U.S. with virtually no crime.

Lush, green, with lots of trees and woods, bordering on the Potomac River, McLean is the combination of two former towns (Langley and Lewinsville). The CIA's HQ is located in the former Langley area (which explains why it's often referred to as "Langley" rather than McLean). It was named after the former publisher and owner of the Washington Post, John Roll McLean. Long home to foreign diplomats, many famous people have lived here — for example, Bobby Kennedy's widow, Ethel once lived at the beautiful "Hickory Hill" estate.
