Potomac, Maryland
Montgomery County

Potomac, Maryland is one of the most beautiful areas in the DC Metro corridor. Unlike Georgetown, with its quaint antique row houses, Potomac is filled with newer, beautiful, enormous homes on large plots of land, along with spacious townhouses and condos. Long touted as one of the most affluent and best-educated communities in the U.S., you'll definitely need a car to get around as public transportation is very limited.

Quiet, serene, filled with some of the best public schools in the area, it's also close to lots of natural parks such as Great Falls Park. There aren't that many shopping or restaurant options, yet you're close to other areas that offer those services. Be sure to visit the Great Falls Tavern Visitors Center and go on the Great Falls Canal Boat Ride.

About 30 minutes from downtown DC by car.

Things To Do

Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center

The Great Falls Tavern was built in 1828 and is used as the visitor center, which offers historical exhibits and great programs. The tavern sits in an 800-acre park along the Potomac River. The beauty of the Great Fall is unmatched and there are two overlooks near the visitor center:

  • To the north, the Washington Aqueduct Observation Deck offers a view of the upper falls.
  • To the south, the Olmsted Island Bridges offer several scenic views of the Great Falls.

The C&O Canal Towpath runs through the park and is great for biking, jogging and hiking. You can also enjoy a mule-drawn boat ride along the canal. These boat rides are offered April through the end of October.
